Kosuke Ohta Biography

1988
  • JunBorn in Miyazaki Prefecture as the second son of Minoru and Aiko Ohta. Diagnosed with autism accompanied by intellectual disability at the age of 2.
1992
  • Began attending Matsuzawa Art Classes. Started painting and drawing in earnest.
1994
  • AprEntered Dazaifu Nishi Junior High School.
1996
  • AugWon the Fukuoka Prefectural Board of Education Award at the “Marine World Uminonakamichi Fish Painting Contest.”
  • SepHeld his first exhibition at the Daiwa Bank lobby in Fukuoka City (has held solo exhibitions every year since then).
2000
  • AprBegan attending “Kobo Maru,” a welfare workshop in Fukuoka City.
2002
  • SepTwo of his artworks were exhibited in the “Naive Painting Exhibition” curated by the Fukuoka Art Museum, alongside works by Rousseau, Picasso, Taro Okamoto, Kiyoshi Yamashita, and Rokuro Taniguchi.
2012
  • AprKosuke’s older brother, Shinsuke Ohta, decided to live and work alongside his brother through art. He established “Etodoke Tonya Kousuke,” a business promoting the sale and rental of paintings, focusing on artists with disabilities, primarily Kosuke.
2013
  • MayHeld his 17th solo exhibition, “Kosuke Ohta: The Autistic Painter Born in Fukuoka,” at Shibayama Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo.
  • DecWon the Grand Prize at the Wild Bird Society of Japan’s 80th Anniversary T-shirt Design Contest.
2014
  • MayThe exhibition “Kosuke Ohta: Autistic Painter – A 22-Year Trajectory” was held at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, organized by Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting (KBC).
2016
  • JulHis artwork “Sunflower” was featured on the Kesho-mawashi (ceremonial apron) of sumo wrestler Amuru from the Ōnomatsu stable.
2017
  • AugDesigned the original artwork and appeared for the giant plastic bottle cap art project on FBS Fukuoka Broadcasting’s “24-Hour Television,” held at Kokura Izutsuya.
2018
  • JanA collaboration event with calligrapher Shoko Kanazawa was held at Namiki Square in Chihaya, Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City, organized by “Shogai Shien Fukuoka Oyajitai.”
  • JunHeld his first curated exhibition at Seijo Sakurasaku Gallery.
2019
  • FebHeld joint collaboration exhibitions in Nishinomiya, Fukuoka, and Kanazawa with Shinnosuke Matsumoto, an autistic illustrator based in Kanazawa.
2020
  • OctOpened “Gallery Kousuke” in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
2021
  • AprThe NHK documentary “Art Gave Me Freedom: The Autistic Painter and His Family” was broadcast nationwide.
2022
